How to Argue Your Point

Better yet, how to defend your point when discussing something online. Some commenters, especially on Reddit, want to highjack the topic, present an irrelevant point, pretend to take the high ground, make the conversation about themselves, play the victim in weird ways, or flat out antagonize the poster. These people are known as trolls or attention seekers. Never try to argue with someone that is trying to derail a good discussion. Stick to the topic and remind the commenter they are off subject and being rude, especially if they are drawing attention away from the main subject. If they continue their rude behavior, keep reminding them in simple, short language, what exactly they are doing wrong and that it's unwanted. The more you argue with them, the more they enjoy it. Simply shut them down and don't feed the argument. If they start to harass you, report them.

It takes practice to be good at arguing. Online discussions are easier since you have time to think and formulate your response. Keeping your point as simple as possible always works in your favor. Remember, you're not trying to "win" an argument. You're trying to present a good point, helpful advise, or tell a story for support. Arguing for arguing's sake is a waste of energy unless you're a troll or an attention seeker. And trust me, writing out long replies to insult trolls is a waste of time. Feeding the trolls encourages them. Take the high ground and simply lay out the rules and the topic and reframe from insults. If they refuse to be civil with their replies, simply point out their time-wasting behavior and move on. Treating them like a disrespectful child goes a long way and demonstrates wisdom and maturity on your part.
